Synopsis
Part ghost-story in the tradition of Kwaidan and part bizarre love-story about a woman ensnaring a less than righteous man in a mode reminiscent of Ugetsu, this film manages to be exquisitely cruel and at the same time strangely alluring, which is not something one normally sees in a thinly veiled sociopolitical commentary.
Directed by Masahiro Shinoda and based off of a novel by Ango Sakaguchi, “Under the Blossoming Cherry Trees” tells the tale of a beautiful city woman and a bandit that has fallen in love with her. After kidnapping the object of his affection and bringing her to his mountain lair, the bandit asks her to let him live with her in the city...
